FIFA president Sepp Blatter said he was surprised that Lionel Messi was awarded the Golden Ball. The award is given to the best player in the FIFA World Cup tournament.
There have been many voices who expressed disappointment because Messi was awarded. Argentina legend Diego Maradona even said that the award was just a marketing move from FIFA.
"I was a little surprised to see Messi come and get the award as the best player of the tournament," said Blatter as reported by the BBC.
However, Blatter said they could see why La Pulga was awarded the Golden Ball. Messi has a major role to bring Argentina to qualify from the group stage.
"If you look at the initial appearance of the tournament Argentina to the final match, Messi has a considerable role. I think the decision was taken by Messi's role."
